This 2,000 sq ft luxury apartment in Central Hong Kong was designed for two professionals – a pilot and a doctor. They wanted a home that felt calm, masculine, and timeless. The brief was to create a refined retreat that supports their demanding lifestyles while remaining elegant and comfortable. Every detail, from materials to lighting, was chosen to promote balance, practicality, and quiet luxury.
The apartment’s exposed concrete beams presented both a visual and Feng Shui challenge. Positioned directly above seating and sleeping areas, they created a sense of weight that affected the flow and energy of the home. From a design perspective, these strong horizontal lines risked making the rooms feel smaller and more confined. The challenge was to restore harmony without compromising the integrity of the architecture.
In addition, the clients’ lifestyle demanded a space that felt calm and restorative after long working hours. The design needed to soften the heaviness of the structure while maintaining a refined, masculine atmosphere. Balancing these needs required precision and creativity, ensuring that practicality and serenity could coexist seamlessly.
Austin began by studying how light and flow interacted with the apartment’s structure. Rather than hiding the beams, he highlighted them with discreet LED strips, turning an obstacle into a statement feature. The new lighting softened harsh lines, creating an ambient glow that neutralised the feeling of pressure and introduced balance to the space.
This philosophy of embracing imperfection guided the entire project. Each detail, from the monochrome palette to the tailored furniture, was chosen to create cohesion and calm. The result is a space that celebrates structure and texture while supporting the clients’ lifestyle, achieving both elegance and emotional comfort in equal measure.
