This spacious family bungalow in Milton Keynes was designed for a Spanish family of four who wanted a home that feels warm, inviting, and full of character. Their vision was to combine modern industrial elements with Nordic simplicity and a touch of playful creativity. The brief called for an open-plan layout that encourages connection, with areas for entertaining, dining, and everyday life. Every detail, from the lighting to the choice of materials, was tailored to create a home that feels balanced, personal, and refined.

The Design Challenge

The bungalow’s open structure offered great potential but required careful balance between openness and intimacy. The layout needed to feel connected without losing definition between kitchen, dining, and living areas. The curved wall presented a particular challenge, as it disrupted the clean architectural lines and created visual imbalance.

The family also wanted the home to feel uplifting and expressive, with zones for shared moments and relaxation. Creating a design that celebrated the natural light while maintaining warmth and comfort for family life became central to the challenge.

The Design Approach

Austin began by studying the proportions of the space and mapping out how each area could serve a distinct purpose without interrupting flow. The curved wall became a unique feature, clad in flexible faux brick panels that extended the texture of the exterior facade indoors. This gave the room continuity while grounding the design in earthy, authentic materials.

Lighting was used to define zones and atmosphere, with sculptural pendants softening the strong ceiling beams and creating calm focal points. A hexagon-tiled section in the kitchen introduced subtle contrast and movement, while bespoke joinery and statement furniture brought comfort and individuality to every corner.

The Design Result

The completed design transformed the apartment into a sanctuary of quiet sophistication. What once felt heavy and divided now feels open, balanced, and full of light. The subtle LED detailing turned the exposed beams into sculptural accents, softening the architecture while enhancing the overall atmosphere. Every space flows naturally, creating a sense of calm that supports the clients’ demanding routines and offers a true retreat from the intensity of city life.

Material choices, furnishings, and lighting all work in harmony to reflect the clients’ personalities. The monochrome palette gives the home a refined masculinity, while thoughtful detailing brings depth and comfort. The result is a timeless, functional space that feels considered and complete – a home that embodies serenity, balance, and understated luxury.
