'Casa'

This residential project in Milton Keynes was designed for a family of four who wanted a home that brings together modern industrial character with Nordic warmth and contemporary comfort. The aim was to create a space that supports family life, encourages connection, and feels uplifting and expressive. The open-plan layout offered beautiful potential, but also required careful planning to ensure every area felt purposeful, inviting, and harmonious as part of the wider home.

The Design Challenge

This family home in Milton Keynes was designed for a household of four. The clients, originally from Spain, wanted a space that blends modern industrial character with Nordic warmth and contemporary comfort. The home needed to feel open and connected, yet defined enough for daily routines and family life. Lighting was an important part of shaping atmosphere, with each area requiring its own identity while remaining visually cohesive.

One of the main challenges was the long open-plan layout and a subtle curve in one of the walls, which disrupted the clean architectural lines. The family also needed a space that encourages togetherness, especially around meals and gatherings. A large dining table was essential to support lively dinners and regular hosting, and a dedicated breakfast nook was requested to make the most of natural light and create gentle morning rituals.

The Design Approach

Austin began by studying how the family used the space day to day, shaping the layout so each zone feels purposeful yet connected. The curved wall was transformed into a feature with flexible faux brick panels, bringing texture and warmth while creating a sense of continuity between inside and outside materials. A hexagon tiled area in the kitchen introduces a playful focal point and acts as a natural divider between food preparation and family activity.

To support shared living, a generous U shaped sofa was selected to anchor the lounge, creating a comfortable hub for movie nights and conversation. Warm, earthy wood tones and layered flooring patterns give depth and character, while sculptural lighting defines each area without overwhelming the space. Plants, including an Areca Palm and a Ficus microcarpa bonsai, were chosen for their symbolism of vitality and abundance, adding balance and softness to the overall composition.

The Design Result

The finished interior is a light filled and uplifting family home with a strong sense of personality. Spaces flow naturally between cooking, dining, and relaxing, encouraging the family to spend time together in a way that feels effortless. The curved wall, once a challenge, is now an elegant architectural feature that grounds the open-plan layout and complements the wider material palette.

Modern furniture, layered textures, and warm accents create a comfortable and refined atmosphere, while thoughtful zoning preserves spaciousness and clarity. The exposed beams, originally dominant, now feel fully integrated into the scheme, supported by lighting that softens their presence. The home has become a place where everyday routines feel enjoyable and meaningful, and where family life unfolds in a setting that is both calming and full of character.
