Residential – Deep Water Bay, HK

'Naturelise'

This residential project in Deep Water Bay, Hong Kong, focused on transforming both the garden and conservatory into spaces that support daily living and relaxed family gatherings. The client wanted an outdoor environment that felt modern, minimal, and durable, while remaining welcoming and comfortable. The conservatory needed to become a practical breakfast area, offering a peaceful start to the day with seating, natural light, and subtle style. The aim was to create spaces that feel connected to nature, long lasting in use, and refined in atmosphere.

The Design Challenge

The garden had great potential due to its privacy and natural surroundings, but the space needed to be carefully considered to balance style with everyday practicality. The brief required increasing seating capacity without overpowering the outdoor environment. The materials also had to withstand Hong Kong’s hot summer climate and heavy rainy seasons while still feeling elegant and inviting.

In the conservatory, the challenge was to transform a small and enclosed room into a comfortable and versatile breakfast space. The design needed to create a sense of openness and tranquility, despite the limited footprint. The palette, textures, and layout all needed to work together to bring softness, depth, and a welcoming atmosphere.

The Design Approach

In the garden, the focus was on creating a space that feels grounded and timeless. The existing stone walls already had strong character, so the flooring was designed using Italian tiles cut in varied sizes to establish a quiet connection between floor and wall texture. Rattan lounge and dining chairs were chosen for their breathable comfort and suitability for hot weather, supporting relaxation, hosting, and everyday living. Lush planting was introduced to harmonise with the outdoor surroundings and create a feeling of vitality.

Inside the conservatory, the palette carries through from the garden to create a natural sense of continuity. The darkest tone was placed on the floor, gradually transitioning to lighter shades toward the ceiling to visually lift the room and enhance spaciousness. A polished plaster wall finish was added to introduce warmth and depth without overwhelming the space. Brass lighting elements and deep green cushions complete the atmosphere with subtle elegance and softness.

The Design Result

The garden has been transformed into a space that encourages both gathering and quiet enjoyment. The breathable rattan seating, weather ready fabrics, and carefully layered planting create an atmosphere that feels relaxed and effortlessly inviting. The tiled flooring brings visual balance to the stone walls, while the open layout supports family time, morning coffee, and evening hosting.

The conservatory now feels calm, refined, and perfectly suited to daily life. The transition in colour value creates a sense of height, while the polished plaster wall and brass details introduce warmth and texture. It has become a meaningful place for the family to begin or end the day, connected to nature and filled with light. Together, the garden and conservatory form a complete extension of the home, blending comfort, practicality, and understated beauty.
